There is something about handmade art that I find deeply grounding. A connection to something more meaningful, created within – it is stored memories, emotions, experiences. It is important to me that my ceramics reflect this: slow and considered, creating a sense of calm and balance in everyday rituals.
I am Kathryn, a self-taught ceramicist creating functional and decorative wheel thrown ceramics from my studio in Wantage, Oxfordshire. I work with stoneware clay, often blending them to create the right tonal balance. My glazes have been formulated by myself and are used to enhance the form rather than to hide it.
My ceramics are not loud, they are soft and elegant, able to blend effortlessly with their environment or become a feature.
I work mindfully, listening to what is needed, visualizing the ceramic in its space – how will it enhance its surroundings? – how will it make you feel? The tactile nature of my ceramics invites this emotional connection, reminding us to slow down and be present.
