An easily recognisable bird due to its tail being longer than its body. They are widespread across the UK, seen mainly in woodland, hedgerows and gardens.

During winter they form flocks of about 20 or more, often cuddling together to share body heat to survive long cold nights. Long-tailed tits are also known for building intricate nests made up of moss and lichen, bound by cobwebs, and lined with up to 2000 feathers.
